Location and surroundings

Val d'Isère

Val d'Isère is one of the most famous ski resorts in France. What was originally a farming village has grown over the years into a lively ski resort with international allure. Unlike many other ski resorts, it has retained its village charm and has many authentic, Savoyard style buildings. Its wooden chalets and baroque church give Val d’Isère undeniable character.

Skiing in Val d’Isère

Together with Tignes, Val d’Isère is part of the Tignes-Val d’Isère ski area. Thanks to the high altitude of this area and its two glaciers, you can ski there from the start of December all the way until the beginning of May.

Val d’Isére is located at the end of a valley, so there is no through-traffic there. Its ski area is mostly suited to intermediate and advanced skiers, due to the height and diversity of its slopes. One piste you definitely shouldn’t miss if you’re looking for a challenge is La Face de Bellevarde, one of the world’s steepest slopes. World Cup skiers race down there at more than 60mph. However, there are a few practice slopes right next to the village and at Col de Fresse there are some green slopes to enjoy. It’s also one of the best places to go for off-piste skiing, thanks to its excellent ski lift connections.

Activities & après-ski

After skiing, there is always something to do along the main street of Val d’Isére. You will find many charming shops there, so you’ll have no trouble finding a souvenir. There are numerous winter activities on offer in Val d’Isére and there is something for everyone. Go ice skating in the centre, dogsledding through the valley, speed through the snow on a snowmobile, or learn to ice climb at the La Daille icefall. You can even relax by learning how to ice float on Ouillette lake. The nightlife in Val d’Isére is exclusive and luxurious. The most well-known après-ski venues there are La Folie Douce, Doudoune Club, and Le Petit Danois.

Tignes-Val d'Isère ski area

Tignes-Val d'Isère (formerly L'Espace Killy) is a high ski area that combines the Tignes and Val d'Isère resorts. It offers 300 kilometres of slopes and an altitude range of over 1600 metres, giving you challenging and snow-sure slopes of a quality that you won’t find anywhere else.

Beginner skiers will feel right at home on the 147 kilometres of blue slopes, but this ski area is particularly popular with advanced skiers. There are almost 70 red and black slopes in total and a wide range of challenging off-piste descents. Snowboarders can enjoy themselves at the DC Park, a large snowpark in the Tignes ski area where you can even watch back footage of your jumps to perfect your technique. With the ski pass included in your Sunweb holiday package, you can explore without limits through the whole Tignes-Val d'Isère ski area.

Hotel, chalet, or apartment?

Whether you are looking for a spacious chalet close to the slopes, or a super luxurious hotel in the middle of the bustling centre, there is an accommodation for everyone in Val d'Isère. Planning a solo trip, a family getaway, or a romantic adventure? With Sunweb, you can tailor every detail of your holiday package to suit your needs. Tignes - Val d'Isère

Tignes - Val d'Isère is one of the most famous ski areas in the Alps, and includes Tignes and Val d'Isère. The region covers a very large area, and spreads itself across a huge range of altitudes. Experienced skiers and snowboarders will be impressed with the many black pistes and off piste options. Novices and fans of relaxed ski touring can head for the longer, wider blue pistes. The area also benefits from a fantastic snow record. Espace Killy is one of the best ski regions in Europe.

The slope down the Roche de Bellevarde, or more commonly know, 'Le Face', is a black piste that starts on the mountain top (2827 meters / 9,300 feet) and ends a kilometre lower at Val d'Isère!
Free riders head out to Le Spot, an unpisted area near Tignes accessible with the chair lift Col des Ves. Freestylers divide their attention between 2 boarder cross, 2 half pipes and 2 snow parks.

There are two glaciers in Espace Killy, which allow you to ski 10 months per year. The glaciers are also well worth a visit in the winter. Queues at the lifts are rare as the lift system is modern and well thought out. There are plenty of chair lifts with a windshield, cabin lifts and funiculars, (mountain trains), that help you up to the of the mountain in swift trip.

Guests staying in Tignes have the choice between two lift passes: the Super Tignes lift pass for the ski area of Tignes or a lift pass for the entire Espace Killy ski area. You can also extend the lift pass for one or two days on location (approx. € 27,50 p.d.). Outside of peak season, Espace Killy lift passes are not sold and sometimes only the pistes on the glacier are open. If you are staying in Val d'Isère the lift pass is included with your stay.
