Sustainability at Celebrity Cruises
With a fleet of 15 ships travelling to over 300 destinations, Celebrity Cruises is one of the most luxurious cruise companies out there. A large travel organisation, they are well aware of their responsibility for a more equitable an sustainable planet. Below, we will explain how they do their part by putting this into practice.
Innovation and smart design
Energy and emission
Celebrity Cruises aims to consume energy and fuel as efficiently as possible with smart and innovative technology, such as LED lighting on all their ships as well as the use of green energy. Part of their ships features solar panels to power all the lifts, for example. Energy-efficient equipment is used on board and windows are fitted with a special sunproof layer, keeping indoor temperatures lower to reduce the need for airconditioning. In addition, all ships in the fleet have a hydrodynamic design to save quite a bit of fuel and feature the latest generation diesel engines to reduce emissions.
Saving water, recycling and reducing waste
Water and waste management
A cruise ship cannot do without fresh water on board. Water is used for drinking, washing, sanitary facilities and all hot tubs and swimming pools. Celebrity Cruises aims to reduce water consumption on all its ships and purify and reuse water wherever possible. In addition, low-flow taps and showers were installed throughout the ship and the dishwashers and washing machines are water-saving as well. Water consumption results in all kinds of waste water. Celebrity Cruises aims to refrain from dumping this waste water into the sea untreated.
Just like their sister company Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises participates in the Save the Waves programme. Save the Waves is committed to reducing waste. And successfully so: the amount of waste that needs to be disposed of on shore has plummeted by 85%. Especially by reducing the use of disposable products, separated waste collection aboard Celebrity Cruises ships an recycling wherever possible.
Active partnership with the community
Social responsibility
Celebrity Cruises considers itself part of the communities of the ports they visit and has a special bond with the Galapagos islands. All excursions offered by the cruise company in this region were aligned with the Galapagos National Park and meet the most stringent environmental requirements. Celebrity Cruises also founded the Galapagos Fund in collaboration with Galápagos Conservancy. The fund stimulates their guests to make a contribution for the protection of the ecosystem of this remarkable archipelago.
Active contribution to the protection of ecosystems
Biodiversity and marine life
Celebrity Cruises considers protecting the oceans one of its greatest responsibilities. To reinforce their activities in this regard, they entered into a partnership with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF). Both organisations work together to improve the protection of biodiversity and life at sea and WWF helps Celebrity Cruises formulate challenging sustainability goals. For example, to reduce emissions or buy more sustainable food.
Full commitment to gender equality, diversity and inclusion
The people behind the cruise company
Celebrity Cruises is powered by the employees who are there for the company's guests day in, day out. Back in the day, few women worked in the cruise industry, especially at the officer and management level. Celebrity Cruises is committed to changing that and leads the pack when it comes to gender equality. A whopping 32% of officers consists of women, the CEO is a woman and the first female cruise ship captain works for Celebrity Cruises. Celebrity Cruises wants everyone to enjoy their outstanding service and was named the most LGBTI+ friendly travel organisation and the most LGBTI+ friendly employer several times over.
