Looking for guaranteed snow in Austria? We’ve got the lowdown on the most snow-sure spots! With their high altitudes and excellent natural snowfall, these resorts promise perfect conditions. Here’s where you can be sure of a snowy ski holiday.

What Makes a Ski Resort Snow-Sure?

For a resort to be considered snow-sure, several factors come into play: location, climate, and altitude. High-altitude villages and slopes often guarantee better snow conditions and a longer ski season. Some areas get more natural snow even at lower altitudes. But remember, every season can be different. Tip: check recent snowfall in the area before booking to get a good idea of what to expect. Most modern resorts use artificial snow to supplement natural snowfall, especially when needed. A snow-sure resort maintains good snow throughout the season without relying too heavily on artificial snow or unpredictable natural falls.

When Does the Most Snow Fall?

In Austria, the prime time for snowfall is from December to March, with February being the most snow-sure month. These months are ideal for a ski holiday, coinciding with the peak season and perfect for events like Snowbombing and UK half-term breaks!

Snow-Sure Ski Resorts in Austria

Austria is home to many snow-sure resorts with top-notch facilities for skiers. Here are some of the best:

Obertauern

Obertauern is one of Austria’s most snow-sure resorts. Sitting at 1,740 metres, with slopes reaching up to 2,313 metres, it boasts a long season from November to early May. Perfect for a late Easter ski trip! Thanks to its high altitude, Obertauern usually has better snow conditions than nearby areas. The resort offers 100 kilometres of pistes, a mix of blue, red, and black runs, suitable for all levels. The famous black run under the Gamsleiten 2 lift is a must for advanced skiers. Many accommodations are ski-in/ski-out, so you can hit the slopes right from your doorstep! Obertauern is also known for lively après-ski, speedy chairlifts, and a variety of dining options. Thanks to constant snowfall and excellent facilities, Obertauern is a top choice for a snow-sure ski holiday.

The area boasts 305 kilometres of pistes, with the highest point at 2,811 metres, ensuring excellent snow conditions. With vibrant après-ski, cosy mountain huts, and charming villages, Ski Arlberg is an ideal ski destination!

Obergurgl – Hochgurgl

Obergurgl – Hochgurgl, often just called Gurgl, is a snow-sure resort high in the Ötztal Valley. Despite not being a glacier resort, it reaches up to 3,082 metres! Tip: bring snow chains if you’re driving, as Austrian law requires them in poor weather. The area gets snow from both the north and south, ensuring an early start and long snow periods. With over 100 kilometres of pistes, the resort offers wide runs, a snow park, and cosy mountain huts. Obergurgl is Europe’s highest church village at 1,930 metres, while Hochgurgl is slightly higher with more hotels. Known for being relatively quiet compared to other major resorts, it’s perfect for skiing from November to late April.
